Description

These charming Heart Shaped Hand Pies are a delightful treat perfect for any occasion. Made with a flaky all-purpose flour crust and filled with sweet cherry pie filling, they are beautifully decorated with red food-colored egg wash hearts and sprinkled with sugar for a sparkling finish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 ½ cups Unsalted Butter, cold
  • ¾ cup Cold Water
  • 3 large Egg Whites
  • 4 tablespoons Granulated Sugar + extra for sprinkling
  • 1 teaspoon Red Food Coloring
  • 1 can Cherry Pie Filling

Instructions

  1. Measure and prepare all ingredients, including cutting butter into small blocks for easier dough incorporation.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix 4 cups flour with 2 teaspoons salt to distribute evenly.
  3. Add cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and cut it in until pieces resemble small peas or coarse breadcrumbs.
  4. Slowly add about half of the cold water, mixing well. Add the remaining water spoon by spoon until the dough just comes together.
  5. Shape the dough into a ball, then into a rough log, and cut into four equal sections. Roll each into balls and place in plastic bags.
  6. Refrigerate the dough balls for about 10 minutes to firm up before rolling out.
  7. On a floured surface, roll one dough ball to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut out small ½ inch heart shapes and place on a plate.
  8. In a small bowl, mix one egg white with 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 teaspoon red food coloring. Brush the small heart cutouts with this mixture and allow to dry.
  9. In another bowl, combine the remaining two egg whites with 3 tablespoons sugar for brushing the pies later.
  10. Set the oven to 350°F (175°C) to get ready for baking.
  11. Using a heart-shaped dumpling maker, cut pairs of larger heart shapes from the dough balls.
  12. Place one heart shape on one side of the pie press, pressing to secure. Add the second heart on the other side.
  13. Lightly brush both heart dough sides with the clear egg wash to help seal the edges and add shine.
  14. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of cherry pie filling onto one heart side, keeping filling away from edges.
  15. Close the pie press firmly to seal the hand pie around the edges, then release the formed pie onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  16. Continue assembling pies with remaining dough and filling, brushing each pie with the clear egg wash.
  17. Affix one of the red food-colored small hearts to the top of each hand pie for decoration.
  18. Generously sprinkle the hand pies with additional granulated sugar for a sparkling crust.
  19. Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 28-30 minutes or until the pies turn golden brown and cooked through.
  20. Remove pies from oven and allow them to cool on a wire rack before serving.
  21. Serve the pies warm or at room temperature, and enjoy the delicious flaky texture and sweet cherry filling.
  22. For gifting or selling, place pies inside bakery boxes with windows, close boxes, and add stickers to the top as desired.
