Description

This Hidden Heart Cake recipe creates a stunning and delicious surprise inside a classic pound cake.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 Box pound cake mix, 16-Ounce
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/3 cup Oil
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • Red food coloring gel, as needed
  • Nonstick cooking spray, as needed
  • 1 Box pound cake mix, 16-Ounce
  • 1 ½ Cups powdered sugar
  • 2 to 3 Tablespoons whole milk
  • ½ Teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Valentine’s sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 9×5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray and line it with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the red pound cake batter by combining one box of pound cake mix with the eggs, oil, and water until smooth. Add red food coloring gel until a vibrant red color is achieved and pour into the prepared loaf pan.
  3. Bake the red batter for 45 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then cool completely on a wire rack.
  4. Once cooled, slice the red pound cake into ½-inch to ¾-inch thick slices and cut hearts from the center using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes.
  5. Mix the vanilla pound cake batter using the second box of pound cake mix with the corresponding eggs, oil, and water. Prepare another loaf pan as before.
  6. Arrange the chilled red hearts in a tight row down the center of the prepared loaf pan. Use leftover loaf pieces if needed for stability. Spoon or pipe the vanilla batter around and over the hearts.
  7. Bake the assembled cake at 350°F for 55 to 65 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick. Cool in the pan for 15 minutes, then cool completely on a wire rack.
  8. Whisk together powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons whole milk, and vanilla extract until thick but pourable. Adjust with an extra tablespoon of milk if needed.
  9. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake and sprinkle with Valentine’s sprinkles before the glaze sets. Slice to reveal the hidden heart design.

Notes

  • Ensure the red batter is completely cooled before cutting.
  • Refrigerating the heart shapes helps them hold their form.
