Description

A hearty hamburger steak served with rich gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 ½ lbs. ground beef, 85% lean
  • 4 Tablespoons frozen butter, shredded
  • ½ cup yellow onion, very finely minced
  • 2 teaspoons yellow mustard
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt/Pepper
  • 2 yellow onions, sliced into ¾ inch strings
  • 3 Tablespoons cold unsalted butter, divided
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup cold water + 3 tablespoons corn starch

Instructions

  1. Gently combine minced onions, shredded butter, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and ground beef. Don’t overwork the meat.
  2. Form into oval steaks and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  3. Remove from fridge and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steaks for 2-3 minutes on each side. Set aside.
  5. Decrease heat to medium-low. Melt 2 Tablespoons butter and add onions. Cook for 15-20 minutes until softened and caramelized.
  6. Add chicken broth, beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Scrape the skillet to lift meat remnants for flavor.
  7. Mix cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Bring gravy to a boil and whisk in cornstarch mixture until thickened.
  8. Add steaks back to the skillet and spoon gravy on top. Cover for 10 minutes until cooked through (internal temperature should be 160° F).
  9. Swirl in remaining cold butter for a smooth finish. Sprinkle with parsley and serve with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots.

Notes

  • Cooked and crumbled bacon can be added to the meat.
  • Top with Swiss cheese before serving.
  • Add mushrooms to the gravy if desired.
  • For creamier gravy, mix in a can of cream of mushroom soup at the end.
